Next year, SAS will launch a new route between Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). This new service will have five weekly flights and complement the airline’s current operation daily operation from the Danish capital city to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

A new route

On February 9, 2023, SAS will launch its new route from Copenhagen to New York. According to the airline, the new route will enable SAS customers to travel easily from both the West and East side of New York as SAS continues to offer departures from Scandinavia to Newark.

This new service will be SAS’ 13th route to the United States. It currently operates three routes from Stockholm (ARN), two from Oslo (OSL), and eight from Copenhagen (CPH). Overall, the airline has 65 weekly services and 15,654 seats available.

The JFK service will begin with five weekly flights from Copenhagen, ramping up with daily services for the summer schedule. SAS will be operating in Terminal 7 at JFK. At JFK, we can find other Star Alliance members such as Copa Airlines, Avianca, Turkish Airlines, Egyptair, TAP Air Portugal, EVA Air, All Nippon Airways, and United Airlines. The arrival of SAS at Terminal 7 will allow customers to connect easily with United Airlines.

More connectivity to the United States

As previously stated, SAS has plenty of commercial services in the United States. Erik Westman, EVP & CCO, Network and Revenue management at SAS, said,

“We are very pleased to launch our new route to JFK. SAS offers a solid product to Newark Airport from Scandinavia, and we believe that this addition to JFK from Copenhagen will strengthen the New York offer to our customers. The US is a strategic market for SAS, and we will continue to develop new routes and destinations whenever the right opportunity presents itself.”

US destinations continue to generate demand for more frequent departures. SAS will offer about 130 departures per week on a total of 12 routes this winter. The new route to JFK will depart from Copenhagen on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 18:25, arriving at 21:30 local time. The return service will depart at 23:00, arriving in Copenhagen at 12:55 the next day.

Once the service becomes daily in the summer season of 2023, it will depart from Denmark at 19:20, arriving at 22:00 local time. The return service will depart at 23:55, arriving at 13:45.

SAS has yet to announce which aircraft it might employ in its services to JFK. In the Copenhagen-Newark route, SAS currently operates its services with its Airbus A330-300 fleet. These planes have the capacity to carry up to 266 passengers in a three-class configuration (178 in economy, 56 in premium economy, and 32 in business). Nonetheless, SAS is scheduling two daily services for February 2023 on this route and, according to Cirium, is looking to employ its narrowbody Airbus A321neo fleet, just like it currently does in routes from Copenhagen to Boston and Washington. For the route to JFK, SAS could do the same. We will have to wait and see.
