Kuwait's low-cost carrier, Jazeera Airways, will launch direct flights between Kuwait and Egypt's Sphinx International Airport (SPX) starting on May 16.

This means Jazeera Airways will now fly to seven destinations in Egypt. The service will begin with four weekly Airbus A320neo flights, providing customers with easy access to Greater Cairo, Giza tourist sites, and Red Sea resorts.

From its hub at Kuwait International Airport (KWI), the airline flies to Alexandria Borg El Arab (HBE), Assiut International (ATZ), Cairo International (CAI), Luxor International (LXR), Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH), and Sohag International (HMB) airports in Egypt.

Jazeera Airways operates daily flights to Cairo, which is one of the main gateways into Africa. The airline's fleet consists of eight Airbus A320s and 11 A320neos. The first flight will be operated on the A320neo, while the other aircraft will be deployed on the route later.

Egypt is the second most visited country in Africa, with 7.9 million people visiting the North African nation last year. It has nearly ten international airports, with Jazeera serving seven. The airline's Chief Executive Officer Rohit Ramachandran said;

"We are delighted to fly to our seventh destination in Egypt, with Jazeera Airways being the first GCC carrier to operate direct flights to Sphinx International Airport. With four flights a week to this great leisure destination, we also offer a convenient and affordable travel option for Kuwaiti students studying in the country as well as the Egyptian ex-pat community visiting families back home. I would like to especially take this opportunity to thank the Egyptian Civil Aviation authorities for their tireless efforts to open up greater connectivity to this beautiful country."

The two terminals at Sphinx Airport have an annual capacity of 1.2 million passengers, serving up to 900 people every hour. With its proximity to Egypt's main hub, the airport will be an alternative destination for passengers traveling to surrounding areas.

This will facilitate a faster journey for customers arriving and departing the airport, especially during the holiday and peak seasons. Congestion in Cairo will be significantly reduced, and according to Jazeera, customers can save up to two hours in the rush hour traffic by traveling through SPX.

Sphinx International Airport

Sphinx International Airport is only an hour from downtown Giza and about two hours from Cairo International, one of Africa's busiest hubs. Residents of the Greater Cairo districts of 6 October and Sheikh Zayed and governates of Fayoum and Beni Suef will have easier access to these areas from SPX.

For tourists, the airport will offer convenient connections to some of the nation's most popular sites, like the Great Sphinx, the Pyramids, and the forthcoming Egyptian Museum. It will also connect them to the famous Red Sea resorts of Sharm el-Sheih and Hurghada.

Although Jazeera will be the only Middle Eastern carrier operating flights to SPX, Condor and Air Cairo also fly to the airport. With global air travel close to pre-pandemic levels and the opening of the museum in Giza, Sphinx Airport is expected to see a passenger hike throughout the year.
