Ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines recently announced its plan to hire several thousand new employees this year. The move comes as the airline battles an ongoing struggle to move forward with its proposed merger with JetBlue Airways.

Spirit initially announced the plans to boost its workforce last month. The Miramar, Florida-based airline is holding recruitment events in three cities this month to attract future employees.

"More opportunities"

More than 4,000 new workers will be welcomed at Spirit this year as the carrier continues to add new planes and destinations to its network. According to a statement, the new employees will include pilots, flight attendants, maintenance workers, and other roles for support. Linde Grindle, Spirit Airlines' Senior Vice President, and Chief Human Resources Officer, said the airline has several roles available.

"We're welcoming thousands of new Spirit Family Members across our network this year and have a broad range of positions available for people with all different interests, talents and experience levels. As Spirit continues to grow, so do our people. Joining one of the fastest-growing airlines means our Team Members have more opportunities to gain fun travel perks, advance their career goals and enable people to travel more often, to more places."

Spirit is also growing in new cities and existing destinations within its network. Last week, the carrier announced that it would be flying a new route from its operating base in Las Vegas. Spirit plans to be the only airline connecting Charleston International Airport to Sin City this fall.

"These job opportunities allow job seekers across the nation to soar with attractive travel benefits and the advancement opportunities associated with working for a dynamic and fast-growing airline," the airline said.

There will also be recruitment events for pilots and maintenance technicians. The pilot hiring event will take place in Miramar on April 11th, while the Aviation Institute of Maintenance Career Fair will be on April 20th in Las Vegas.

Milestones and memories

The goal to hire more than 4,000 people comes after Spirit successfully hired several new workers last year, marking some notable milestones. In 2022, the carrier added new crew bases in Atlanta, Miami, and Houston, growing the airline's number of bases nationwide to 10. Also in Houston, at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Spirit opened a state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance facility.

The carrier introduces new routes to nine cities, adding to its network of nearly 100 destinations served in the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Last year, the airline also took the deliveries of 21 new family aircraft. This year, the Spirit said more new cities will be added to its network, as well as an additional 26 new Airbus aircraft. Spirit was included in Forbes' 2022 edition of America's Best Employers for Diversity and on Linkedin's Top Companies in Travel & Hospitality list last year.
