Spirit Airlines has been showing its appreciation for Cancun as of late. The ultra-low-cost carrier has now added the sixth city to gain flights to the Mexican destination this year. It will now fly to Cancun from New Orleans. Additionally, the airline is adding another Latin American service from Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) with flights to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Regular schedule

According to a press release, direct flights from Cancun will start on June 10th and will depart four times a week. Here, Spirit will be hoping to connect vacationers to their resorts on the coast. These flights will depart on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

Operations to San Pedro Sula will then start a day after and will head south three times a week. MSY director of aviation Kevin Dolliole hopes to use this service to fly some of the many members of the Honduran diaspora in New Orleans to the Central American city.

He also highlights the important relationship that the airport holds with Spirit. The two parties have had a long-lasting partnership and the carrier is one of the hub's fastest-growing airlines.

Passenger needs

Spirit President and CEO Ted Christie shared how honored he is for his company to able to launch two new international routes at the same time. He is eager to help passengers, which the airline calls "Guests" reach the two destinations with ease, whether its for vacation or personal reasons.

"We are incredibly proud to open up nonstop international service from New Orleans with two destinations at once. Our guests asked us for international connectivity, and we are excited to offer them the Best Value in the Sky as they explore new places,” Christie said.

“Adding these international routes is part of our promise to invest in the Guest. Whether they fly to Cancun for leisure or to San Pedro Sula to reconnect with friends and family, we will continue to connect our Guests with the communities and destinations they seek the most."

Expansion period

Spirit is keen to build on its network. On the back of the announcement of the new flights, the Florida-based outfit is increasing its frequency to Orlando with another daily operation from New Orleans. This doubled-up service will start on April 22nd.

Altogether, Spirit has shown its intent on expanding on its opportunities, especially within the Latin American market. With several airlines expressing their interest in the region, Spirit is making sure that it is getting its fair share.

Simple Flying reached out to Spirit for more information on the new routes. A spokesperson for the airline shared that the New Orleans service to San Pedro Sula is an example of how the airline is pioneering a route that its counterparts haven't tried. Ultimately, the operator's low costs allow it to enter markets when others consider it financially prohibitive.
