The New American Express Gold Card 0

New Amex gold card

American Express just released a new version of its Premier Rewards Gold Card, with a new name and new look. The now-christened American Express Gold Card has a few perks (as well as a few downsides), including an industry-leading 4X membership reward points at U.S. restaurants and supermarkets.

These 4X points (on up to $25,000 in purchases at supermarkets) are double the card’s prior earning potential for restaurant and supermarket spending.

Other benefits include an annual $120 dining credit, or up to $10 per month, when you dine at Shake Shack, The Cheesecake Factory or Ruth’s Chris Steak House. The credit also applies to dining via services Grubhub and Seamless.

For travelers, a new benefit with the card is a free membership with Travel Collection by Travel Leaders Group. This membership comes with various travel discounts and special amenities and services.

Of course, the card didn’t remove its other much-loved benefits, which includes triple points on flights booked direct with airlines or American Express’s travel portal, a $100 airline fee credit per year for things like baggage fees and a $75 hotel credit for stays at properties within The Hotel Collection.

But we mentioned a new look as well – for a short time period, you can snag yourself a limited-edition rose gold version of the card, through Jan. 9.

What are the downsides?

  • The sign-up bonus (or rather, ONE, of the sign-up bonuses) is pretty bad…but we’ll get to that in a second
  • There’s no waiver for the annual fee for your first year ($250)

The Sign-Up Bonus

There are two sign-up bonuses that you can find for this card.

The offer being promoted on the AmEx website states that you can earn 25,000 reward points after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first three months. Likewise, through Jan. 9, you can receive 20 percent back in statement credits on dining purchases at U.S. restaurants, up to $100 per account.

There’s another offer, though, for 50,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first three months that is available via referral.
