As a part of their national Her Art Here competition United Airlines has unveiled its latest one of a kind painted planes. Designed by San Francisco resident Tsungwei Moo, the Boeing 757 called "California" features the Golden Gate Bridge, palm trees and sunglasses.

The eye-catching design pays tribute to what makes the Golden State the place it is, with the Pacific Ocean, endless beaches and long southern Californian summers.

United Airlines two major has hubs in California

California is an important place for United Airlines with the Chicago based airline having significant hubs in Los Angeles and San Francisco. United Airlines' Her Art Here competition was launched in February to give interested female artists the chance to express their artwork on the body of a passenger plane.

Describing her California entry as a work of passion, Tsungwei's design was shaped by her own personal journey after emigrating to the United States of America from Taipei, Taiwan, aboard a United Airlines flight.

In United’s press release to publicize the aircraft and the Her Art Here contest Tsungwei talks about her design saying:

"It's truly a dream come true. The vibrant colors, sunshine and subject matter make it California. I could never imagine one day my art will be displayed on a United Airlines plane which brought me to the United States. There are no culture borders in art and it doesn't matter my status is an emigrant female artist. This plane has its mission now, to bring more joy into people's life, connecting people and uniting the world through experience art."

17 days in the paintshop

Before making its first flight the California themed aircraft spent 17 days in a hanger in Amarillo, Texas, while painters recreated Tsungwei's winning design on the United Airlines Boeing 757.

United Airlines came up with the Her Art Here contest after learning that of all the paintings on display in American museums, only 13% of them were created by women artists.

Having their artwork transferred to a United Airlines Boeing 757 aircraft provides the winning artist with a traveling canvas that flies on average 1.6 million miles in a single year.

The Her Art Here contest was open to those who identify as a woman. This included all American residents who consider themselves a woman regardless of what gender they were born.

United Airlines asked the artists to come up with unique designs

United Airlines asked the competitors to come up with a unique design that represented either New York/New Jersey or California, two key marketplaces for United Airlines.

Artists were asked to paint in their own unique style, while also taking into account United’s mission and what the communities they were painting about meant to them.

All entries were scrutinized by a panel of judges and marks given for content and criteria with the final winners determined by a combination of the judge’s scores and votes sent in by the public.
