The airline announced the donation via a press release. United will donate $165,000 directly towards California communities. This includes the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s 2019 California Wildfires Recovery Fund, the Community Foundation of Sonoma County’s Resilience Fund, and California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund. Specific allocations have not been released by United.

United’s president for California, Janet Lamkin, had the following to say:

The effects of the wildfires on our communities in California are heartbreaking, and we want to do our part to support the organizations that are on the ground, helping those in need

United Red Cross donations

United is also donating 5,000 blankets to the American Red Cross. These blankets will be distributed across shelters in California. These shelters are places where those displaced as a result of these fires can find somewhere to stay and access relief supplies. The Red Cross has previously assisted in the case of California wildfires back in 2018.

United in California

California is a major market for United. They operate a large hub in San Francisco while also having a significant presence in Los Angeles. These wildfires have disastrous effects on local communities. Although unclear, some of United’s employees may be impacted by the fire. United has not indicated if any of its employees will receive additional assistance from the carrier.

The California wildfires

A series of devastating fires have wreaked havoc across California. The Kincade fire and Getty fire are two of the most notable as of now. Unfortunately, the weather has not been the most favorable in fighting these fires. In fact, some power companies have cut off some power to customers in California. The New York Times offered a closer look at how these fires impact communities. Below is some footage of the impact of the California wildfires:

As firefighters and officials continue to counter these fires, United’s donations should offer some additional support. It is unclear, however, if United will pledge additional funds.

It is not uncommon to see major airlines pledge towards philanthropic causes. These fires are a major event in a very important market for United Airlines. Thus, it is not so surprising to see United take an active stance with this wildfire donation.

Simple Flying hopes that our California readers are safe. We hope to see these fires extinguished soon.
