United Airlines has increased flights between Newark and Edinburgh to double daily. Newark is one of three Edinburgh routes for United, alongside Chicago O'Hare and Washington Dulles. This is the latest information.

United doubles Newark-Edinburgh

Beginning from the US on May 25th (26th back), United will have two daily flights from its main transatlantic hub at Newark to the Scottish capital this summer. It'll continue at this frequency until September 28th (29th back). Using the 757-200, the schedule is as follows, with all times local:

  • Newark to Edinburgh: UA36, 20:10-08:05 (+1) (6h 55m)
  • Newark to Edinburgh: UA161, 23:50-11:40 (+1) (6h 50m)
  • Edinburgh to Newark: UA37, 09:40-12:20 (7h 40m)

Double daily back after six years

The 3,268 mile (5,259 km) Newark to Edinburgh link was introduced by Continental 19 years ago in 2004. Following its merger with United, it entered United's hands.

Edinburgh is used to being more than daily in the peak summer, obviously when demand and fares skyrocket. It first had a double daily operation in summer 2005, which returned annually until 2017. The 757 was almost entirely used. When United's no longer operated Newark-Glasgow is considered, it often had a triple daily summer service from its New Jersey hub to Scotland.

Since 2017, Edinburgh's summer flights have reduced to daily, also with the 757. It was driven by the introduction of Washington Dulles, which started in May 2018. However, United's Newark-Glasgow was still operated then, ensuring double daily Newark-Scotland. Glasgow ended in October 2019 – presumably, it would have returned in summer 2020, but the pandemic put paid to that.

It has consolidated at Edinburgh

United has consolidated at Edinburgh, and Newark will again be double daily. From May 25th-September 28th, it'll have almost 43,000 one-way seats, the same as in summer 2019 (when Edinburgh and Glasgow were both daily) but down by a third versus summer 2019 (three daily). As demand increases and fares remain high, it seems sensible to increase it without going overboard with seats to fill, with the inevitable consequence on fares and yields.

A United record to Edinburgh

United will have up to four daily Edinburgh flights this summer, smashing its previous record of three. There's the twice-daily service from Newark (757-200), along with daily flights from both Chicago O'Hare (757-200) and Washington Dulles (757-200).
