There’s a new targeted offer that you may be able to find in your American Express Membership Rewards account. Targeted individuals can receive a transfer bonus of either 30 or 50 percent on Membership Rewards points transferred to Hilton Honors points. If you’re targeted, you can take advantage of the offer through Dec. 31.
The standard transfer rate for American Express Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points is 1:2, so at the 50 percent bonus mark, the transfer rate would be 1:3. You have to transfer your points in quantities of 1,000, which means the 1,000 Membership Rewards points will translate to either 2,600 Hilton Honors points if you’re offered a 30 percent bonus, or 3,000 if you’re offered a 50 percent bonus.
- Receive a 30% bonus for 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 2,600 Hilton Honors points
- Receive a 50% bonus for 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 3,000 Hilton Honors points
The Fine Print
- It will take up to eight weeks for you to see the Hilton Honors bonus points in your account
- The Hilton Honors bonus points do not count toward elite tier qualification
Is This Membership Rewards Offer a Good Deal?
Well, it depends. If you receive the 30 percent bonus, likely not. If you receive the 50 percent bonus, however, you could make it worth your while.
An extra 2,000 bonus points is enough for a free stay at a low-tier Hilton property, if you transfer the lowest amount of points possible. If, however, you transfer a large number of points, you could also get a great deal by booking a high-end resort.
Not only are resort fees waived on award stays, but you get a high value per point when your stay is more expensive.
For example, according to The Points Guy calculations, at the Hilton Wakoloa Village, you could pay $674 per night, or redeem an award night at 60,000 points. If you stay five nights, with your fifth award night free as a Hilton Honors member, you could pay $3,859,39, or 240,000 Hilton Honors points after redeeming 80,000 Membership Rewards points in order to do so. That’s a value of 4.8 cents per point, for an all-around lesser cost for your stay.
However, unless you receive the targeted 50 percent bonus offer, this just isn’t going to add up for you, as generally, transferring American Express Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points isn’t a good use of your points to begin with, and you’d do better to redeem your Membership Rewards points for miles.
