Volotea’s Used Airbus A320 Family Aircraft Are Coming From All Over The World

As Spanish low-cost-carrier Volotea prepares for what it hopes will be a bumper summer following a year of groundings and restrictions, we can’t help but notice how the Asturias Airport (OVD)-headquartered airline is scrambling to acquire aircraft.

With its focus firmly centered on destinations around the European side of the Mediterranean, Volotea used to operate a fleet of 19 Boeing 717-200s. As the sole European operator still flying the 125-seat Boeing 717 and with production ending in 2006, Volotea decided to retire its 717s in January 2021 and switch to an all-Airbus fleet of bigger planes.

Volotea has a fleet of 26 planes

Currently, Volotea, which incidentally is derived from the Spanish verb “revolotear,” meaning “to fly around,” operates a fleet of 20 Airbus A319-100s and six Airbus A320-200s.

With people around Europe unable to travel due to COVID-19 restrictions, the expectation is that when the European Union releases its Digital Green Health Certificate Scheme in July, there will be a surge in bookings. Volotea has just acquired a former 15-year-old Alaska Airlines Airbus A320-200 from Miami-based lessors Carlyle Aviation Partners to meet that demand and has more planes arriving.
