WestJet has rapidly been expanding its presence in international aviation with new routes added to its operations. The Winter 2019/20 season will have available year-round flight service from Calgary to London Gatwick using newly purchased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
Details About the New Route
The latest flight route schedule announcement from WestJet revealed the new route addition. The update will allow for service between Calgary and London all year round. Direct flights are currently available, but they are only seasonal. WestJet provides direct routes but only during this Winter 2018/19 season. When the routes using the new 787-9 Dreamliners begin in this year’s winter season, the schedule will be identical until it’s fully operational for the entire year.
The schedule provided by WestJet will begin operation on 3 November 2019:
WS001 YYC1820 – 1020+1LGW 789 257
WS002 LGW1150 – 1431YYC 789 136
Passengers will depart Calgary at 6:20 PM and arrive the next day in London Gatwick at 10:20 AM. The return flight will leave London Gatwick at 11:50 AM and arrive in Calgary at 2:30 PM. The flight time on WestJet is approximately nine hours and the time difference between the two cities is seven hours.
The Calgary to London trip isn’t new for WestJet; however, this will be the first time that the airline offers direct flight service for the entire year. Several other airlines operate routes between Calgary and London including Air Canada, WestJet’s biggest competitor in the Canada travel market. The route will become more established to continue to build the international foundation for WestJet.
WestJet’s New 787-9 Aircraft
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a new addition to the WestJet fleet. It was a strategic move for the airline in preparation for its expansion efforts. The 787-9 Dreamliner is a smaller jet that has been approved for flying into airports of similar size to London Gatwick. Adding this aircraft to their lineup offers WestJet many more route expansion opportunities in the future.
WestJet recently purchased ten 787-9 Dreamliner planes. The first plane has already been delivered and completed its first revenue flight domestically in Canada. The plane will be used soon for the Calgary to London flight, including two upcoming plane deliveries of the 787.
International Service on the 787-9
The new addition of WestJet’s 787-9 means new amenities that will be featured onboard the flight. The nine-hour flight between Calgary and London will have to provide exceptional comfort for its passengers to stay true to the WestJet brand. The plane’s interior and exterior design highlight the Canadian heritage of the airline as it begins more international operations. It’s expected that approximately 150,000 passengers will travel between the destinations annually.
Calgary is the main hub for WestJet. Expanding routes from this airport include several other international routes upcoming. Plans for the remaining seven 787-9 Dreamliners that WestJet is expecting haven’t been set yet. The London Gatwick service will initiate a new era for the aircraft in WestJet’s fleet.
