The Boeing 777 series offers a number of wide-body twin-jet airliners that are praised for their superior qualities both in terms of performance and passenger comfort. With recent upgrades, the aircraft is preferred by many airlines that want to boost their revenue and reduce costs while continuing to offer the same superb experience to their passengers.
As the 777-300 and the 777-300ER are two of the most popular versions of the Boeing 777 it is worth having a look at them. The Boeing 777-300 vs 777-300ER
It is not possible to make the Boeing 777-300 and the 777-300ER comparison without going into details about their specifications. While, in general, we can conclude that the main difference comes in the distance the 777-300ER covers (as is clear from the ER abbreviation standing for extended range), there are also some differences in the construction of the aircraft.
While the length of both planes measures at 73.90 m, their wingspan, wing area and height differ. The 777-300 has a wingspan of 60.90 m, wing area of 427.80m2 and height of 18.50, while for the 777-300ER the numbers are 64.80 m, 452.00m2 and 18.60 m respectively.
Both planes have two engines but the thrust per engine is much higher with the ER version 513 kN compared to just 436 for the 777-300. The MTOW (maximum takeoff weight) is 297,560 kg for the 777-300 and 351,534 kg for the ER. While both have a cruise speed of M0.84 the range the 777-300ER is 14,600 km compared to 11,000 km for the 777-300.
The ER version seats 365 passengers which is just 3 seats less than the 777-300 so we can say that there is no significant difference between the Boeing 777-300 and the 777-300ER in terms of capacity.
History of Boeing 777-300
Boeing presented the 777-300 for the first time at the Paris Air Show on June 26, 1995. The major assembly of the aircraft started almost two years later – in March 1997 and the first aircraft was rolled out on September 8 the same year. The 777-300 made its maiden flight on October 16, 1997. Cathay Pacific, who are offering an unprecedented loyalty program at present, was the launch operator of the model.
Since 1997, a total of 60 aircraft were delivered to eight different customers before the deliveries were stopped in 2006. As of July 2017, there were 49 Boeing 777-300 in airline service.

The arrival of Boeing 777-300ER
The Boeing 777-300ER is considered the B-market version of the 777-300. Since its launch, however, the aircraft proved to be a real success. Thanks to being equipped with the most powerful turbofan engines – GE90-115B, and aerodynamic refinements the aircraft offers a smooth flight and an additional reduction in fuel consumption by 1.4%.
The first 777-300ER was delivered to Air France, which is currently struggling with its future development, on April 29, 2004. Since then, the variant has become the best-selling 777 type and has also performed better by its direct rival the A330/340 series.
Boeing has delivered a total of 789 of the 777-300ER to 45 different customers as of June 2018. The manufacturer is also considering a freighter conversion to serve the cargo market.
Despite the difference between the Boeing 777-300 and the 777-300ER, they both provide an excellent flying experience. The aircraft are preferred by many established airlines such as United Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air France and considering adding some 737s to their fleet in an attempt to improve passenger services.
