Calling all creative aviation enthusiasts – Wizz Air is looking for a special livery to reflect its commitments to sustainability. The Hungarian low-cost carrier is launching a competition for creatives across the globe to create a one-off design for one of its Airbus A321neo jets.

Competition background

Running until February 12, Wizz Air is seeking a design to raise awareness of its sustainability-driven development and drastic carbon reduction goals. The airline has outlined several specifics for entrants. The design is required to be incorporated within Wizz Air’s iconic pink and cobalt blue livery, with the addition of a green accent while retaining its current branding.

Designs will be judged by a jury of team members from marketing, communication, and fleet departments, with the winning entry undergoing a feasibility study to incorporate it either partially or fully before being applied to one of Wizz Air’s ultra-efficient Airbus A321neos. The winner will also receive a prize of €2,000 ($2,150) in WIZZ vouchers, divided as 10 €200 vouchers, to be used across the carrier’s expansive network.

Submission details and terms & conditions are available on Wizz Air’s website.

Sustainability dreams

The airline is focusing on its recently added Airbus A321neo fleet, the backbone of its plans to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2030. The young and efficient jets offer a 50% reduction in noise, a 20% reduction in fuel, and a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide compared to its predecessor. Wizz Air is currently the largest operator of the type in Europe, with plans to take on over 300 A321neos to replace its older A320 family aircraft.

Wizz Air has notably made significant strides in its green development over the past two years. During 2022 the carrier recorded its lowest ever carbon emissions per passenger, at 55.2 grams per passenger/km, a sharp 15% decrease compared to its previous record set in 2021.

In January 2022, the airline was named Europe’s most sustainable carrier, according to analysts Sustainalytics, scoring a 25.0 ESG risk rating owing to its aggressive green policies. Wizz Air was later awarded CAPA’s distinguished title of Global Environmental Sustainability Airline Group of the Year at the Asia Aviation Summit and Sustainability Expo in Singapore. Johan Eidhagen, Wizz Air’s Chief People and ESG Officer noted.

“We are proud that Wizz Air passengers make the most environmentally responsible choice when they choose to fly with us.

We have achieved our industry leading sustainability position by operating the most efficient and modern aircraft and focusing on making a positive impact. We are thankful for all the hard work that everyone in the company has done to make our lowest ever carbon intensity annual result possible.”

Through this year until 2030, Wizz Air is set to begin receiving Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAFs) to slash its emissions further following a partnership with Austrian gas and oil company OMV. Over the next seven years, over 185,000 tonnes of biofuel will be delivered to the carrier.
